His Excellency the President Hon. William Samoei Ruto, PhD., S.G.H. has commissioned the “Garissa High School Steam Cooking Carbon Asset Infrastructure” the project, which has been piloted in six schools: Nairobi School, Kwale Boys, Kwale Girls, St. John’s Kaloleni, Madogo High, and Garissa High. This initiative aims to transition schools from wood fuel to climate-friendly alternatives such as LPG, electricity, and solar energy.

Through the Ministry of Education and NACONEK, the government seeks to leverage carbon markets and other climate financing sources to support this transition. The clean cooking technology, with an efficiency rate of 85% on firewood and 90.3% on LPG, is designed to significantly reduce wood fuel consumption in schools while generating carbon credits under the Kenya Carbon Markets Regulations 2024. Additionally, the project aligns with the National Cooking Transition Strategy.

The President emphasized Kenya’s commitment to climate action and directed the Ministries of Environment and Education to complete the pilot and present it to the Cabinet for approval and nationwide rollout. He reaffirmed Kenya’s role as a global and regional climate champion, advocating for clean cooking solutions not only in schools but also in households, ensuring sustainable and environmentally friendly practices across the country.
